HPSA and MUA County Designations

HPSA
Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs) are designated by HRSA as having shortages of primary medical care, dental or mental health providers and may be geographic (a county or service area), demographic (low income population) or institutional (comprehensive health center, federally qualified health center or other public facility).

MUA/MUP
Medically Underserved Areas/Populations are areas or populations designated by HRSA as having: too few primary care providers, high infant mortality, high poverty and/or high elderly population.

Find HPSA and MUA/MUP designations
Use this site to determine the HPSA or MUA/MUP designation for a specific address or county. If your county is a partially designated county, you will have to use the following website (FFIEC) to compare the census tracts listed in order to determine HPSA status for a specific location.

Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC)
If your county was determined to be a partially designated HPSA, it will list the census tracts within the county that are actually considered HPSAs. This site will help you determine within what census tract a specific address is found.

Use this site to find census tract and other information on a specific address.
