Health Literacy
Through the Health Literacy ProgramTexas AHEC East - Capital Region fosters healthy behavior development in individuals, groups, and communities by promoting those programs designed to educate and encourage adoption of healthy lifestyle practices. We offer information and hands-on activities for many health issues and help create strategies to address health challenges such as obesity and smoking.
By partnering with local entities and utilizing staff expertise, we develop programs that raise public awareness of various health issues. Texas AHEC East - Capital Region acts as a resource for the community and assists in the development and delivery of health education programs.
Ventanilla de Salud (in English) (in Spanish)
In Travis County 32% of residents are Latino. Access to affordable healthcare is a critical issue for this underserved population, which in turn impacts the community at large. In April 2008, Texas AHEC East - Capital Region partnered with the Consulate General of Mexico in Austin to address these community health challenges through the Ventanilla de Salud. This health outreach program, based on a nation-wide model, provides immigrant and Latino families culturally appropriate health education, free health screenings, and referrals to area resources, thereby creating a healthier community for all.

Health Service Directory (in English) (in Spanish)
United Way 211 Capital Area has compiled a directory containing information about free or low-cost services provided by nonprofit organizations and government agencies in Travis County. It is designed to help families find services in times of need. Local government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and other community organizations provide financial assistance, emergency food and shelter, medical care, and other critical services.
